Christmas in Aspen: What to Book, What to Skip, and Where Dinner Comes From

Aspen at Christmas is two weeks that book like one night. Families treat the stretch from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day as an annual tradition, the same houses fill with the same people, and the town runs at its fullest. We cook those weeks every year. This is the guide we send the families who ask how to plan it.

When Christmas week books

Earlier than anywhere else we work. Standing clients rebook the next year before this year's residency ends, and the best rentals on Red Mountain and in the West End go the same way. The best Christmas weeks for a private chef go by November 15. We can book closer than that, and we hold short-notice capacity, but by December you are choosing from what is left rather than what you want.

What is open, and what is not

Aspen's restaurants are open through the holidays and booked weeks out for the nights that matter. A table for twelve on Christmas Eve is a contest most visitors lose. Shops and grocers close early on Christmas Eve and most of the day on Christmas. The households that skip all of that have the meal come to them, with the groceries bought before the shelves thin out.

The traditions worth planning around

The tree lighting downtown happens in mid-December, with carols, cocoa and Santa. From December 20 through the 31st, downtown runs the 12 Days of Aspen: ice skating, ornament decorating, storytelling for the kids and holiday pop-ups for the adults. Wintersköl, Aspen's mid-December toast to winter, brings torchlight descents and fireworks on Aspen Mountain. On New Year's Eve the fireworks go off over Aspen Mountain in the evening, and in Snowmass the torchlight parade comes down Fanny Hill. Dates shift a little each year, so check the town calendar once your week is set.

Where families stay

Red Mountain estates, West End historic homes, Starwood compounds and Castle Creek residences hold most of the multi-family Christmas houses we cook in. Snowmass Village is the family-ski version, closer to the lifts and quieter at night. Whichever it is, check the kitchen before you book: a working oven, a full-size fridge and a table that seats everyone at once are what make the chef week easy.

How the week runs

Breakfast before the lifts. A simple lunch left in the fridge. Dinner after last chair, heavier on ski days and lighter the night half the group has a village plan. Christmas Eve is the anchor meal, the one everyone photographs. New Year's Eve is a course-by-course dinner served through midnight with the kitchen clean before the toast. Headcounts move nightly as houseguests rotate, and one chef keeps one standard through all of it.

The chef night, or the chef week

A private chef in Aspen arrives with the groceries, cooks in your kitchen, serves the table and leaves it clean. One dinner, or the standing 10-to-21-day residency that is Aspen's dominant holiday format. Kids' plates run alongside the adults'. Dietary needs are tracked per person. NDAs are routine.
