Christmas in Estes Park: Catch the Glow, Elk in Town, and Where Dinner Comes From

Christmas in Estes Park is a mountain-cabin Christmas, not a ski week. The town sits at the east gate of Rocky Mountain National Park. The elk come down for the winter to the meadows and golf courses. And the families who drive up for the holidays rent a cabin or a lodge and stay put. We cook there through the holidays. This is the guide we send families who ask how to plan the week.

When Christmas week books

The best Christmas weeks for a private chef in Estes Park go by November 15, and New Year's Eve goes first. Thanksgiving stays open longer, with the best dates going by November 1. We can book closer than that, and often do. Two other December nights book the same way: Hanukkah, which runs December 4 to 12 this year, and New Year's Eve, where the best dates go by December 1.

What is open, and what is not

Estes Park is a small town, and a table for twelve on Christmas Eve is a hard reservation to win. The park changes for winter too. Trail Ridge Road normally closes to through travel in mid-October and reopens in late May, so there is no winter drive over to Grand Lake. The east side stays open. Bear Lake Road is open all year, and Trail Ridge is open as far as Many Parks Curve for the view. Expect snow and ice on the park roads, and check conditions before you go.

The traditions worth planning around

The season starts before Thanksgiving with the tree lighting in Bond Park, on Saturday, November 21 this year, with the official lighting at 5:30 p.m. The evening after Thanksgiving, the Catch the Glow Parade comes down Elkhorn Avenue at 5:30 p.m., with more than 40 floats, bands and fire trucks. Once the lights are up, the town's free Holiday Lights Driving Tour runs past Bond Park, the Elkhorn Avenue storefronts and the YMCA of the Rockies. The lights are brightest from 5 to 9 p.m. The Stanley Hotel's December calendar includes Boulder Ballet's Nutcracker Suite and a New Year's Eve ball. Dates and times shift a little each year, so check the Visit Estes Park calendar once your week is set.

Cabins, lodges and where families stay

Most of the Christmas weeks we cook in Estes Park are in rental cabins and mountain homes: up Fall River Road toward the park, around Mary's Lake and Carriage Hills, and out Devils Gulch Road toward Glen Haven. Rental kitchens vary more than the listing photos suggest. We ask for photos ahead of the stay and bring what the kitchen lacks. If the cabin has a range and a sink, we can run a full menu from it.

How the week runs

Breakfast before the park. Most park trails above 9,000 feet can be snowshoed when the snow allows. Hidden Valley, off Trail Ridge Road, is the only sledding hill in the park. The elk are most active at dawn and dusk, in Moraine Park and around Lake Estes. Watch from a distance, and have dinner underway when everyone comes back in. Christmas Eve is the anchor meal. New Year's Eve is a course-by-course dinner at the cabin. Kids' plates run alongside the adults'. Dietary needs are collected once for the whole house. For the rest of the trip, read things to do in Estes Park in winter.

The chef night, or the chef week

A private chef in Estes Park arrives with the groceries, cooks in your kitchen, serves the table and leaves it clean. One dinner, or breakfast through dinner for the whole stay, with the headcount moving as family arrives and leaves. A bigger party at a lodge is catering in Estes Park. What it costs, all in

A private chef in Estes Park starts at $150 per person, all-inclusive. Most holiday dinners land between $150 and $250 a head, and a multi-night Christmas residency is quoted as one written number for the stay. That number covers the menu, the groceries at cost, the cooking, the service and the cleanup. Prefer the dinner delivered? Chef-made Christmas dinners come to Colorado mountain towns from $100 a person with a $500 minimum, cooked in our kitchen and ready to heat. Scenario numbers are in the private chef pricing guide, and the whole season is on the holiday page.

Booking checklist

Fix the dates. Send the headcount, where you are staying and the nights you want covered. A written all-inclusive proposal comes back within 24 hours, and the date is held once the deposit is in.
